green apple awards
Since 2017, Global have received seven Green Apple Environment Awards.
Green Apple Environment Awards are presented to organisations showcasing exceptional sustainability initiatives and environmental best practice.
2025
Global was recognised once again at the Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice, this time for the continued success and impact of our Outdoor Sustainability Initiative (OSI). The award celebrates our ongoing progress in embedding sustainability into every part of our operations.
Driving measurable change and industry-wide influence in just 18 months, OSI has delivered tangible, verified environmental benefits: recycling over 270 tonnes of print waste annually, improving product recyclability from 25% to 87%, and cutting energy use by more than 2.5 million kWh a year for TfL through Project Bright Green. Beyond these results, the initiative is reshaping behaviours across our teams, suppliers, and clients, accelerating Global’s journey to net zero while setting new standards for the Outdoor media industry. This Green Apple Award recognises Global’s sustained commitment to improvement and our leadership in driving long-term, positive change.
2024
Global’s dedication to sustainable advertising has reached new heights, earning us a Gold Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice in 2024. This recognition celebrates the transformative strides we’ve made in reducing emissions and waste through our Outdoor Sustainability Initiative (OSI).
As the largest provider of bus advertising in the UK, we’ve revolutionised the way bus boards are produced. Partnering with Delta, we introduced a closed-loop recycling model, eliminating the previously used vinyl layer and its backing material. By printing directly onto fluted polypropylene boards, we’ve reduced the carbon footprint of our bus boards by up to 61%—a significant leap forward in decarbonising outdoor advertising.
This innovation has also contributed to raising Global’s overall warehouse recycling rate to an impressive 92% as of May 2024. Looking ahead, our Phase 2 developments in 2025 will incorporate an advanced de-inking process, enabling us to recycle up to 70% of materials into new boards and further cut emissions. Additionally, the installation of solar panels at our recycling and printing sites will transition energy use to on-site generated renewables, amplifying our impact.
2023
Building from our 2022 Green Apple Award, Global have gone a step further to reduce waste and lower emissions through our live music events.
Global’s Events and Video teams were awarded a sixth Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice, showcasing our commitment to sustainability in operations and events, such as the Capital FM Summertime Ball.
A multitude of sustainable practices are rolled out in all our live events, such as banning single-use plastics, using rechargeable batteries, offering attendees choices when it comes to low-carbon foods, reducing paper consumption, and optimising travel to cut down on transport emissions. Through all of this, and by offsetting unavoidable carbon emissions, we achieve Albert Certifications for sustainable production practices.
2022
At Global, we continually review our waste management processes. Global were awarded our fifth Green Apple Award for an exceptional increase in recycling rates.
Our Warehouse Recycling Taskforce found a company that could recycle a material previously thought non-recyclable, leading to an increase in recycling rate from 18.4% to an impressive 46.8% within a year!
2021
Global’s War on Single Use Plastics.
In an effort to remove single use plastics across the business, Global actioned the following initiatives, earning us our fourth Green Apple Award…
Eliminating 30,000 disposable plastic bags annually by switching to reusable canvas bags for maintenance on the London Underground
Replacing single-use plastics at events with alternatives like CanO Water™ and compostable Vegware™ cutlery.
Incorporating recyclable materials and compostable products for catering and eliminating plastic bottles in favour of cans and reusable bottles for office catering.
Introducing washable face coverings for staff to eliminate single use PPE during the pandemic.
2018/19
Our second and third Green Apple Awards were awarded to us based on our significant carbon reduction. Across the outdoor side of the business, we reduced our company carbon footprint by 35% across a 5-year period (2013-2017), exceeding our target of 25%.
This carbon emission reduction was a result of a series of environmental initiatives aimed at reducing fuel and energy consumption, including…
Moving to a new warehouse and office with a suite of energy efficiency measures including better insulation
Upgrading facilities to LED lighting
Introducing more efficient vehicles to our fleet
Global work with Planet Mark to independently audit our carbon footprint.
2017
We were awarded our first Green Apple Award for developing an office space to be as environmentally friendly as possible, minimising waste, and reducing energy and water usage. Working with an independent assessor, Alphacello, who awarded us a prestigious SKA Gold Certification for our efforts.
Highlights include…
Minimising waste at design stage, reusing and repurposing materials where we could
Energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems cut energy operating costs by 31% compared to the previous building
The project carbon footprint was measured at 29.76 tCO2e which has been offset by planting 96 trees on National Trust property in the UK.
Materials containing recycled content were used where possible
FSC Certified wood was used throughout
Maximising natural daylight to create a bright environment for our employees
