98% of evacuation material was beneficially re-used.

Of the 6million tons or so of earth that was displaced, 98% was beneficially re-used, most notably in the development of an RSPB nature reserve in Wallasea, Essex – this site is twice the size of the City of London.

Reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy efficiency.

The Elizabeth line trains are lighter than most trains at 319 tonnes, making them amongst the best in their class for energy efficiency. Using LED lighting across the Elizabeth line is 62% more energy efficient than standard light fittings.

Biodiverse green and brown rooftops have been built on stations and infrastructure buildings where possible across the Elizabeth line to support birds, mammals, bees and butterflies. Green and brown roof systems provide several environmental benefits including improvements to air quality, water absorption and drainage, conservation and biodiversity and reductions in noise. For example, the new Whitechapel Elizabeth line station is topped with a green roof of carbon cleansing sedum plants

The new underground Elizabeth line stations have platform screen doors and under platform heat extraction which aid in keeping stations naturally cool.

The Elizabeth line will be crucial to London’s recovery from the pandemic, helping avoid a car-led recovery by providing new journey options, support regeneration across the capital and add an estimated £42bn to the UK economy.

An estimated 55,000 jobs across the UK supply chain have been supported by the construction of the Elizabeth line.

The Crossrail project was the first major UK project to deliver integrated station designs with three elements in mind: the station, above station property development and improved public spaces. Each element complements the other to create safe and attractive spaces that people will enjoy moving through, improves accessibility, and knits the new stations into their surroundings.
